BOYS TENNIS: Joplin tops Glendale for first win of ’21

The Joplin High School boys tennis team defeated Glendale 5-4 on Monday.

The Eagles earned their first win of the spring season and are now 1-1.

“Glendale pushed us and made the match close,” Joplin coach Aaron Stump said. “It was nice to see our doubles teams communicating with one another. For singles, even in the matches we lost, the guys played some good games.”

Joplin won two of three doubles matches.

At No. 1 doubles, Joplin’s Logan Merkley and Jeffrey Evenson defeated Zachary Allen and Burhan Khan 9-7.

“Logan Merkley was consistent with his serve and kept the ball in play,” Stump said. “Jeffrey Evenson did a nice job putting points away at the net.”

Glendale’s Carson Johnson and Jack Barnes defeated Ben Wardlow and Colin Vermillion 8-4 at No. 2 doubles.

At No. 3 doubles, Joplin’s Josh Yarnall and Michael Mancipe defeated Andre Murray-Joshua Kalista 8-2.

“Josh and Michael continue to work with consistency,” Stump said. “They are communicating well, which helps them win longer rallies.”

Joplin and Glendale split the six singles matches.

At No. 1, Allen defeated Merkley 8-5. Joplin’s Evenson beat Johnson 8-3 at No. 2.

“Jeffrey was landing some nice serves, which helped set up his points,” Stump commented.

Glendae’s Khan beat Wardlow 8-5 at No. 3, but Joplin’s Yarnall topped Barnes 8-4 at No. 4.

“Josh was able to position the ball well, which helped him win a lot of his points,” Stump noted.

Murray beat Mancipe 8-1 at No. 5 singles, but Joplin’s Vermillion earned an 8-5 win over Kalista at No. 6 singles to clinch the dual victory for the Eagles.

“Colin capitalized when the ball was hit short, incorporating a mix of spin and angles,” Stump said.

Joplin plays Webb City at 4:30 on Tuesday at Millennium Family Fitness.

PREP BASEBALL: Webb City improves to 10-1 with run-rule win over McDonald County

WEBB CITY, Mo. — When the Missouri High School Baseball Coaches Association released its first state rankings of the spring on Monday afternoon, the Webb City Cardinals were listed at No. 3 in Class 5.

A few hours later, the Cardinals showed all those in attendance why they’re deserving of that type of recognition.

In a solid overall performance, the host Cardinals got the bats going right away en route to a 12-2 win over McDonald County in five innings on a windy afternoon at Chuck Barnes Field.

“We had a long week with doubleheaders Friday and Saturday, so I wasn’t really sure what kind of energy we’d have coming out today,” Webb City coach Flave Darnell said. “But I was pleased. We’ve been swinging the bats really well and we got the bats going right away today. Devrin (Weathers) really sets the table for us. We’ve got a lot of punch behind him. And Eric Fitch in the nine-hole has been doing an awesome job turning the lineup over.”

With a fifth-straight win, Webb City improved to 10-1.

“We’ve been getting good pitching and good defense and our offense is clicking top to bottom,” Darnell said. “We’ve had a lot of guys step up and hit the ball well. This is a fun group to watch and a fun group to coach, so hopefully we can keep it rolling. We’ll just keep trying to get better.”

GAME RECAP

The Cardinals wasted little time in taking control of this one, as the hosts plated four runs in the bottom of the first inning.

Devrin Weathers walked and Treghan Parker followed with an RBI triple to center field. Matt Woodmansee doubled to left, scoring Parker, before Shane Noel and Cole Gayman both contributed run-scoring singles, giving the Cardinals a four-run cushion.

The Mustangs got on the board in the second when Cross Dowd singled and later scored on Isaac Behm’s RBI single.

Webb City added three runs in the bottom half of the second, as Parker hit an RBI single, Woodmansee had a run-scoring groundout and Parker scored on a wild pitch to give the Cards a 7-1 advantage.

The hosts extended their lead with three runs in the third.

Aiden Brock doubled, Eric Fitch singled and then Parker launched a three-run home run over the fence in right field for a comfortable 10-1 lead.

McDonald County received a run-scoring single from Behm in the fourth, scoring Levi Malone, but Webb City ended the game early by pushing across two more runs in the fifth.

Brock and Cooper Crouch both walked before Weathers lined an RBI single to center. Crouch later scored on a wild pitch for the final margin.

NAMES & NUMBERS

Webb City recorded 13 hits, with eight different players contributing.

A Missouri Southern recruit, Parker drove in five runs on three hits to lead the Cardinals. The shortstop singled, tripled and homered.

Weathers, Gayman and Fitch had two hits apiece. Recording one hit apiece were Cy Darnell, Woodmansee, Noel and Brock.

Woodmansee drove in two runs.

Noah Mitchell was the winning pitcher. The senior right-hander limited the Mustangs to five hits. He struck out two and walked one.

“Noah did well,” Darnell said. “I don’t think he felt as good as he did the other day. I think he was frustrated, but he grinded it out. Noah’s a great kid and he’s a competitor.”

Behm went 2-for-2 with two RBI for the Mustangs (6-5).

A sophomore right-hander, Cross Dowd took the loss for McDonald County. He allowed 10 earned runs on 11 hits in 2 2/3 innings. Ethan Francisco allowed two runs in 1 2/3 of relief.

PREP BASEBALL: CJ opens Bill O’Dell Tournament with back-and-forth win over Neosho

CARTHAGE, Mo. — Carl Junction improved to 7-2 after opening up the 2021 Bill O’Dell Tournament with a back-and-forth 10-9 win over Neosho on Monday at Carl Lewton Stadium.

“Neosho is a good program,” Carl Junction coach Jake Stevenson said. “We knew looking through the scores in some of the games they’ve played, they’re a good baseball team and only going to continue to get better. I thought they really swung it well today, but I was impressed with the way our guys continued to answer back as we settled into the game. We got some big hits from guys when we needed it. It was a tough day to defend and pitch, but when we needed to, we got those outs.”

It was an offensive show, as both teams combined to score 19 runs on 24 hits, with seven total errors.

GAME ACTION

The run production from both teams was early and often, as the Wildcats (1-10) pushed across a run in the first after Lane Yost grounded into a double play, allowing River Brill to score. Brill led off the inning with a single.

Carl Junction answered right back with a three-run bottom of the first to take the lead. The inning was fueled by a two-run double to left by Dylan Eck.

Neosho’s Eli Zar came up with a one-out single in the second before coming around later in the inning to score on an errant pickoff throw by the Bulldogs to trim the deficit to 3-2.

The Wildcats took their first lead of the game in the top of the third after scoring four runs on four hits. Brett Slavens walked to lead off the inning and later came around to score on a wild pitch to tie the game. With two outs and a runner on second, Wyatt Keplar tripled to left-center field to score the go-ahead run in Yost before touching home shortly after on a wild pitch to give Neosho a 5-3 advantage. Wyatt Shadwick doubled to left field later in the inning to plate another Neosho run and move the margin to three.

“I think playing the tough competition early is starting to help us because we are picking up breaking balls a little better and we are in hitters’ counts, we are taking aggressive hacks,” Neosho coach Danny Powers said about his team’s offensive approach. “Instead of hitting weak ground balls of weak fly balls, now we are starting to see the ball shoot the gap a little more with some power.”

The seesaw affair continued in the last of the fourth inning when Carson Johnson doubled to right-center to score Jordan Woodruff and Cole Stewart, cutting Neosho’s lead to 6-5. Two batters later, Noah Southern connected for a two-run home run to left field to give the Bulldogs the lead, 7-6.

“I think our guys had good approaches in the box and looked comfortable,” Stevenson said. “On days like today, you have to outscore your opponent. We were lucky enough to do that today.”

In need of a response, the Wildcats tied the game up in the top of the fifth when Ryan Cargile, who led off with a walk, scored from second on a throwing error by the Bulldogs, allowing Flynn to reach base safely. Shadwick ripped a ball to the gap in left-center for a go-ahead triple to cap the top of the fifth.

“I think our kids did a good job of battling back and putting ourselves in position again with the lead late,” Powers said. “Today, I just don’t think our defense helped too much. It wasn’t awful, but it was enough to give CJ extra at-bats and make our pitchers throw extra pitches. Against good teams, you can’t give them too many extra opportunities.”

With runners on second and third with one out in the bottom of the sixth, Carl Junction’s Alex Baker delivered the final big blow of the game with a two-run single to left, scoring Drew Beyer and Southern, to send Carl Junction to a 10-9 lead and eventual win.

“Alex is an even-keeled guy,” Stevenson said. “You know the mindset when he is in the box is in the right spot. He is a high-character kid, so I am happy for him. A lot of our guys came up in some big spots. It was good to see that. Hopefully we can carry that over and continue to play well.”

IN THE BOX

Eck led Carl Junction with three hits, including two doubles, two RBI and a run scored. Baker went 2-for-3 with a team-high three RBI and a run scored. Southern had a home run, two RBI and two runs scored. Johnson had two hits, including a double, two RBI and two runs scored.

Shadwick led Neosho with two hits, a double and a triple, and a team-high two RBI. Keplar, Zar and Flynn each had two hits

ON THE MOUND

Johnson earned the win for CJ after allowing three runs, one earned, on six hits, a walk and six strikeouts in 4 1/3 relief innings. Eck started and allowed six runs, five earned, on six hits, two walks and four strikeouts in 2 2/3 innings.

Yost started and took a no-decision after surrendering eight runs, six earned, on nine hits, a walk and two strikeouts in five innings. Brill took the loss after allowing two runs on three hits in one inning of work.
